Teachers teach All-Day

I have been a teacher for twelve years and I have so many stories to share but there is one in particular that I will indulge you in. It was my first year teaching and I really did not know what I was doing. There one student who stood out. He was not a "busy body," nor was he shy. He was an average student, but he could not do the assigned work. As a means of helping him, I decided to come in earlier to work. I assisted him with his handwriting and other fine motor skills. A few months went by then we began taking spelling tests. I continued to come in early and found several ways to help my student to become better at spelling. As a result of me coming in early, my student felt confident about his school work. Every once in awhile I see his mother and she tells me he on the A honor roll. There are no set working hours for a teacher, you just have to love what you do and have a passion for teaching. I will continue to wish him and my other students the best of luck.

  1. I couldn’t agree with you more, Theresa. I think what you have done for that child does not only reveal the passionate teacher you are, but also conveys your utter awareness of your calling as an educator. It is of course only fair that teachers are entitled to their own time and personal lives, but it is also undeniable that it is rather difficult for sincere teachers to ignore their students’ struggles, just because it is not within their schedule. I am confident that the time you have spent with your student that year has not only been of great benefit to him; I believe the compassion that you portrayed has also been forwarded to you, nurtured your soul, and added to your character new insight. I feel so inspired by acts of selflessness, and it gives me great pride to hear about it from a fellow educator. We have a saying that means: “The best gift you can give to others is what comes from that is dearest to you.” And what would be more precious than our own time? Thank you for sharing this story. Teachers are a key component to help students navigate through life succesfully.I am glad you went the extra mile by focusing your attention on the needs of that child to bring out his potential. Think about how special and important you made that child feel by donating your extra time. You are so right when you say "there are no set hours for teachers", thank you for your dedication.
